Five people acquitted over incidents following protest march at Skouries

Five people accused of incidents at a protest rally at the Skouries gold mine in Halkidiki in September 2012 were acquitted on Tuesday by a court in Thessaloniki of charges of possession and use of explosives.

The defendants questioned the police videos, saying they were a result of splicing, and denied they threw molotov cocktails at policemen. Other charges relating to misdemeanours were written off for procedural reasons. Photos from the incidents confirmed that one of them was not present.

The presiding judge referred frequently to the deposition of a policeman, the main witness, and accepted the argument that most defendants threw rocks and did not proceed to further acts of violence, while one of them threw a banger that was neither able to create an explosion, nor to endanger anyone.
