Greek armed forces chief asks Turkish counterpart for release of Greek soldiers

The head of the Greek armed forces, Hellenic National Defence General Staff chief Admiral Evangelos Apostolakis, asked for the release of the two Greek soldiers detained in a Turkish prison and an end to Turkish illegal activity in the Aegean, during a meeting with his Turkish counterpart in Brussels on Wednesday.

Apostolakis and Turkey’s Chief of the General Staff and Commander of the Land Forces General Hulusi Akar were both attending the 179th NATO Military Committee in Chiefs of Defence Session taking place in the Belgian capital. The NATO meeting was held to prepare for the next meeting of NATO heads of state and government.

According to an HNDGS announcement, Admiral Apostolakis also had meetings with a number of his other counterparts in NATO, the Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR) General Curtis M. Scaparrotti, Supreme Allied Commander Transformation of NATO General Denis Mercier, the Chairman of the NATO Military Committee Petr Pavl and the Chairman of the EU Military Committee Mikhail Kostarakos, as well as the Vietnamese Deputy Defence Minister Nguyen Chi Vinh, who attended a meeting of the EUMC on EU cooperation with the United Nations.
