Works to improve conditions at Chios’ VIAL hotspot will continue, Migration Min Mouzalas say

Works at the VIAL reception and identification centre for migrants and refugees will go ahead, Migration Policy Minister Yiannis Mouzalas said on Friday in statements before his departure from the island of Chios to Athens.

Mouzalas visited the island to coordinate the works aiming to improve conditions at the VIAL camp and monitor the placement of 1,600 container huts that will house the migrants and refugees.

For the time being there is no other solution to using the VIAL camp and no alternative proposal has been put forward by the local community and local authorities, the minister underlined.

Referring to conditions in the camp, Mouzalas said that the infrastructures will improve and fencing will be built. However, the camp will not be converted into a closed centre because that would be against European and international law for refugees, he explained.
