We hope the government does not attempt a cover-up, Tsapanidou says

“I want to express my sincere condolences to the families who have lost their loved ones. It is a wound that never closes and these people need support,” main opposition SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance spokesperson, Popi Tsapanidou, said on Thursday in an interview with “SKAI TV”.

“At the same time, the entire Greek people, each individual citizen, is experiencing their own mourning and their own difficulty at this time. We all need strength, this tragedy reminds us of our own losses. And it has made us feel insecure,” she commented.

Asked whether a rail telemanagement system was operating in Larissa, after the relevant statements made by Minister of State for transport and infrastructure issues Giorgos Gerapetritis, Tsapanidou replied: “In a statement issued by OSE itself on March 6, it is clearly stated that the fire that broke out in the area in the summer of 2019 destroyed the system in Larissa and it has not been working since.”

“We have similar information from media reporting in the area, as well as from the employees. The fact that the telemanagement system was not working is of great importance, because otherwise the course of the trains could have been seen and the accident could have been avoided,” she added.

“Justice will continue its work. We hope the government does not attempt a cover-up in this case as well,” she noted.
