Environment and Energy Minister Theodoros Skylakakis described the Greece-Cyprus electrical interconnection project as being of “immense geopolitical importance.” He emphasized that Greece took on the geopolitical risk with full confidence in itself and its alliances.
“ This cable can, must and will be built,” he stated in the Hellenic Parliament on Thursday evening, urging all parties to support the relevant amendment he introduced.
Skylakakis stressed that the project offers significant benefits for both sides, economically and in terms of energy security. He also addressed the strong concerns raised by opposition party representatives regarding the geopolitical risk, noting, “ Geopolitical risk can come from many sources, such as a third country that opposes the project or a terrorist act, as seen in other cases.” He added that Greece has full confidence in its international standing, international law, alliances, European backing, US support and the strength of its arguments.
