Greece passes bill on Land Registry

The bill of the Digital Governance Ministry on the Land Registry was passed in parliament late on Tuesday.

The main objectives of the new law are: a) the facilitation and security of transactions, as the purchase and sale of real estate will be completed faster and with greater security, b) the reduction of bureaucracy, c) technological modernisation, since digitisation is combined with the inclusion of artificial intelligence tools to support and upgrade the services provided and d) economic development. A modern, accessible, functional and digital Land Registry is a basic prerequisite for attracting investment and developing the economy.

Greece will finally have a land registry in 2025, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said on Tuesday during the discussion of the bill.

“Greece was the only European state without a land registry in the 21st century. A pending issue that this government had to solve, because in 2025 our country will finally have a cadastre, an accurate map of public and private real estate, with forests and beaches now demarcated, where what belongs to state and what belongs to the citizen is clearly marked and with clear rules that will facilitate collective development as well as individual transactions – and all this without loopholes of arbitrariness and lawlessness,” the prime minister noted.
