Νo active fire front in Xylokastro; scattered oubreaks

Firefighters continue to fight the flames in Xylokastro, Corinth, for the fourth day on Wednesday.

The fire, in which two men lost their lives, started on Sunday and has burnt more than 40 square kilometers (4,000 hectares).

According to the Fire Department, there is no longer an active front but scattered outbreaks in inaccessible areas which the forces are trying to contain and stop any flare-ups.

The Fire Department reinforced the ground forces, which have now reached 570 firefighters with 28 forest commando teams and 160 vehicles, while at the first light of day, 6 helicopters began to operate from the air, one of which for coordination, and four planes. Additional assistance is provided by volunteers, voluntary groups of Civil Protection as well as water carriers and machinery of the Peloponnese Region and the General Staff of National Defense, as well as forces of the Forestry Service and the Greek Police.

At the same time, the General Secretariat of Civil Protection activated the European Civil Protection Mechanism with a request to provide aerial assistance to deal with the forest fires in Corinth. In particular, the aid to our country includes three CL-415 firefighting aircraft, two from Italy and one from Croatia.

Schools in the municipality of Xylokastro-Evrostini remain closed.
