Greek and Turkish coast guard discuss migration flows on Chios

Greek and Turkish coast guard officials have held a technical meeting on Chios on stemming migration flows.

Among the issues discussed at the meeting, which was originally scheduled for March 2024, were collaboration on combatting human smuggling and creating channels of direct communication between local officials of the two countries, in addition to the high-level contacts that already exist.

Port authority chief Giorgos Christianos said it was a “significant day for both the Greek and Turkish coast guard” as it was the first such meeting in five years, which demonstrated the need for both sides to reconnect and work closer.

Chios port authority head Pantelis Vatousis said the aim of the technical talks was the reduction of migration flows in the near future.
