Murders spark renewed push for women’s safety

The tragic murder of a 43-year-old woman in Agrinio, central Greece this week has shocked the country, highlighting concerns about domestic violence and the effectiveness of protective measures for victims.

The victim, identified as Dora, was killed by her 30-year-old former partner, just days before a court hearing related to a restraining order she had filed against him. Despite existing protective measures, including a ban on the suspect approaching her, these proved insufficient to prevent her death.

This incident, just days before International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women on November 25, underscores the urgent need for improved legal frameworks and more proactive protection for women facing domestic violence.

Advocates like Natassa Makrydima, a psychologist at the Women’s Shelter in Agrinio, are calling for more effective enforcement of restraining orders and stronger support systems. She emphasized that while more women are coming forward to report abuse, the legal measures in place often fail them.
