Greek premieres, special features on international film personalities, special screenings, and masterclasses will be part of this year’s 37th Panorama of European Cinema from November 21 to 27 at the Trianon, Newman, and Studio New Star Art Cinema theaters and the Hellenic American Union.
The opening film is Alexandros Avranas’ new one, “Quiet Life”, which had its international premiere at the parallel competitive section “Horizons” of the 81st Venice Film Festival. The director and others who also worked on the film will attend the screening. The last film to be screened will be Guillaume Nicloux “Sarah Bernhardt, La Divine”, in its Greek premiere. The film’s distributor, Zinos Panagiotidis, will be presented with an award for his overall contribution to Greek cinema.
During the Film Panorama, the audience will have the opportunity to watch three more and much-anticipated premieres: “Three Kilometers to the end of the world” (Emanuel Parvu, Romania); “Toxic” (Saule Bliuvaite, Lithuania); and “And the party goes on” (Robert Guediguian, France/Italy)
The European Competition Section will include 11 films, including Avrana’s “Quiet Life”, “The Asylum Seekers” (Michalis Hapesiis), “The Sock” (Kyros Papavassiliou), and “Giannis in the cities” (Eleni Alexandraki).
A series of special features on global cinema figures will also be screened in this year’s Panorama. Included are Greek-American director and actor John Cassavetes, French director and screenwriter Claude Sautet, American director Roger Corman, Greek actress Betty Livanou, and Greek director Stelios Charalambopoulos, who will be presented with an award for his overall contribution to Greek cinema.
There will also be a special commemoration of the 100th anniversary of Franz Kafka’s death, with film screenings including “The Trial” (Orson Welles), Masterclasses by Italian producer of fantasy films Loris Curci and photography director George Arvanitis, and events by FIPRSCI (the international film critics committee).
