Four Greek universities – the Democritus University of Thrace, University of the Aegean, University of Western Macedonia, and Hellenic Mediterranean University – are forging partnerships with prestigious global institutions like Columbia, Boston, the Sorbonne, and the University of Zurich.
These collaborations aim to offer joint and dual master’s programs in cutting-edge fields such as energy storage, climate resilience and cultural technology.
The initiative, part of Greece’s “Universities of Excellence” program, is funded by €62 million from the Recovery and Resilience Fund. It underscores a push for internationalization amid challenges faced by Greece’s historically localized education system.
Officials noted that partnerships often stem from personal ties between Greek and foreign faculty, with added emphasis on aligning with globally ranked institutions. Proposals include 28 programs across 43 universities worldwide. The joint degrees aim to enhance institutional reputation and academic opportunities in Greece’s underserved regions.
