Main opposition PASOK-KINAL leader Nikos Androulakis highlighted the achievements and philosophy of the recently deceased former Greek premier Costas Simitis, who had led Greece and the PASOK party during the country’s landmark adoption of the euro. For the politicians that followed him, Androulakis remarked in an article for a special publication on Simitis published on Sunday by the newspaper “To Vima”, Simitis had shown them “that the impossible can become possible through planning and hard work”.

“Costas Simitis had a great vision for the country: that we should always go forward and never back, that we should consider Greece to rightfully belong to the core of Europe, never abandon the effort for a fair society with less inequality and not squander the prestige of institutions to chase after ephemeral benefits. This is why I had deep respect for him,” Androulakis said.

He noted that Simitis had championed a political vision of progressive reformism that strengthened justice and the institutions, enhanced transparency, shared out the dividends of growth and did not widen inequality. Simitis’ achievements were national achievements and milestones in Greek history, while he remained largely untouched by power and its privileges, Androulakis added.

“He was the political antidote to the vice and arrogance of power. With his personal example he replied to polarisation and every form of division,” he added.
