Public Power Corporation Chairman and CEO Giorgos Stassis called on US investors to collaborate on building data centers in Greece at an event organized by the German Marshall Fund (GMF) and the Center of Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) in Athens on Monday.
“Geopolitics, Connectivity and Energy Security: An Athens Conversation” focused on “a conversation on the shifting geopolitical landscape and its impact on transatlantic energy and climate policy,” according to the GMF.
“In 2022, the US supplied Europe with LNG to deal with the European crisis of energy supply and security. Today Europe and the US have the opportunity to collaborate on developing data centers, in order to ensure they will be at the cutting edge of the technological process in an increasingly more digital world,” Stassis said.
He also reiterated PPC’s intention to develop a large-scale data center on the land formerly used by the coal-powered electricity plants in West Macedonia. Recent geopolitical and energy crises, the PPC head said, have “made clear Europe’s priorities to acquire strategic autonomy in parallel with boosting European competitiveness. Taking into account the priorities of the new government in the US, we might need to re-examine the alliance through the angle of business collaborations to security mutual benefits.” PPC’s role, Stassis said, is to show how regional collaboration can be aligned with wider transatlantic goals, and to ensure that Greece and the US face challenges jointly and create opportunities for development and innovation jointly as well.
