Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis stated that Greece will play a leading role in shaping the European Union’s response to US tariffs during a speech at an event in Kozani, northern Greece.
“Greece will play a leading role within the European Union, as it is there that the decisions on how we will respond to this historically unprecedented development will be shaped,” Mitsotakis said.
“We firmly believe that this global trade war, which is now beginning, will benefit no one,” he added, while stressing that he hopes there will soon be a move toward de-escalation.
The prime minister called the move a historic shift toward protectionism and a major break from how the global economy has operated for decades, adding that Greece is ready to face the challenges ahead.
“In any case, I want to assure you that the Greek economy—with planning and responsibility—will be able to meet these difficult challenges,” the prime minister said.
