A nationwide, 24-hour general strike was called by Greek trade unions and trade union confederations on Wednesday. The General Confederation of Employees of Greece (GSEE) and the Civil Servants Confederation (ADEDY) called for the mass participation of all workers, in the public and private sectors, asking for collective labour agreements, the reinstatement of the 13th and 14th salaries as well as measures to address the high cost of living.
GSEE will hold a rally at 11:00 in Klafthmonos square in central Athens while ADEDY will hold a protest outside the Finance Ministry, at 10:30.
Greek air traffic controllers will participate in the strike from 00:01 to 24:00.
All ships will remain docked on Wednesday, April 9, as the Panhellenic Seamen’s Federation (PNO) has decided to take part in the 24-hour strike.
According to PNO, the mobilisation includes all types of vessels and starts at 00:01 on April 9, ending at midnight. Its main demands concern high prices, the housing crisis and collective labour negotiations.
Public bus and trolleybus workers will join the strike with work stoppages, operating only between 9:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. Services will be suspended from the start of shifts until 9:00 a.m. and again from 9:00 p.m. until the end of the day. Suburban bus lines operated by KTEL are expected to run normally all day.
Metro and tram will operate from 10:00 to 17:00.
