A new bill to be tabled in Parliament will suspend the criminal prosecution of debtors to the state (tax service, social insurance funds, public corporations) if they are up to date on their repayment plans.

The draft law will be tabled by National Economy & Finance Minister Kyriakos Pierrakakis as a rider on the bill related to capital market regulations.

It will replace a current law under which debtors – whether individuals or companies owing more than 100,000 euros – were criminally prosecuted until their debt has been fully discharged, despite being up to date on their repayments. This inconvenienced thousands of citizens unnecessarily and burdened courts.

The bill concerns debts on repayment schedules by law, court order, or court official, and suspended debts.
