The Council of Europe found that the referendum scheduled to be held on July 5 does “not meet international standards.”
In an interview with the Associated Press, Secretary General Thorbjorn Jagland revealed that the Greek referendum has a number of shortcomings when it comes to these guidelines.
Greek voters will be asked to vote YES or NO on the bailout package proposed by Greece’s International creditors.
Jagland noted that the internationally advised period of notice to voters is two weeks to facilitate discussion over the question. The Greek referendum was voted by the Greek parliament on Saturday giving less than eight days to voters.
Moreover, according to Jagland, the question should be clear to voters and international monitors should be present for the process.
Jagland identified the lack of sufficient time and clairty given to voters as significant deficiencies.
