After being incarcerated for three and a half years, Vicky Stamati, the wife of former Greek National Defense Minister Akis Tsochatzopoulos, is to be released from prison under certain conditions.
Stamati has been ordered to pay 50,000 euros and report to a police station three times per month. She also cannot exit the country and must give her passport up to the Greek authorities. Stamati has reportedly stated that she does not have the bail money and requested a two-month grace period to come up with the funds. The court has denied the request.
She had been first arrested in 2012 following the Tsochatzopoulos’s arrest. Like him she was then being charged for money laundering. Stamati was ultimately sentenced to 12 years in prison in October 2013.
Stamati’s three and a half year incarceration was tumultuous. In April 2013, she had a double mastectomy procedure. She was then placed in the Dafni Psychiatric Centre in December after being diagnosed with depression. She escaped from Dafni on April 2, 2015. Her flight was short lived as she turned herself in to the authorities the following day.
Tsochaztopoulos, who was the Greek National Defense Minister from 1996 until 2001 with the PASOK party under Kostas Simitis’s administration, is still in prison after being handed a 20 year sentence for money laundering.
