Greece registers 2,500 cases of measles year-on-year, disease centre official says

Greece registered 2,500 cases of measles from May 2018 to the present, the deputy director of the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (KEELPNO) said on Crete on Wednesday.

Agapios Terzidis said most cases were recorded in Etoloakarnania, Achaia and Elia prefectures (NW and South Greece), with ten cases on Crete. In the same time period, measles claimed the lives of three people, two Roma children and a 35-year-old woman.

Terzidis was speaking at an information presentation in the Chania Hospital. He said that the outbreak began in Central Europe and is largely attributed to lack of immunisation. Outbreaks at refugee hotspots were limited, while of the total, 70 cases related to hospital staff.
