A total of 119 migrants from Afghanistan arrived in Thessaloniki

A total of 119 migrants from Afghanistan arrived in Thessaloniki, landing at the “Makedonia” airport, on a special charter flight from Kabul.

According to the Migration and Asylum Ministry, among the passengers arriving on the special flight on Monday are a former Afghan minister, judges, prominent lawyers, women activists, journalists and ordinary citizens, along with their families, whose lives were at risk from the Taliban regime.

In the context of humanitarian aid to Afghanistan after the Taliban took over, Greece has provided a safe haven to another 700 Afghans (819 in total) who are temporarily staying in Greece until their relocation to third countries following agreements between states.

“Greece is actively participating in initiatives for the legal settlement of refugees. It does not cease, however, to implement a strict but fair migration policy and to be ruthless against smuggling networks and illegal migration,” the ministry said in a statement.
