Accident to be investigated once ‘battle’ to clean up spill is over, says Santorinios

“When the battle comes to an end we will be able to investigate the causes of the accident and assign blame,” said Deputy Shipping Minister Nektarios Santorinios on Tuesday, regarding the sinking of the tanker ‘Agia Zoni II’ and resulting oil spill.

Leakage from the tanker has been 99 pct contained and the boom surrounding the vessel prevents it spreading any further, he stated.

He estimated that any oil remaining in the ship will be completely pumped out in 15-20 days. Referring to the pollution, he said it has spread up to Glyfada and “the areas after Glyfada are quite clean to very clean”.

Santorinios explained that regional authorities carry out constant inspections of all fish and seafood that is on sale, while this does not come from the Saronic Gulf.

On the condition of the waters and when the people will be able to swim or fish in them again, he said that this will be decided by scientific agencies based on the data they collect.
