Achtsioglou: ‘Our aim is to make the production model sustainable’

Strengthening employment, reducing unemployment, creating quality job positions and structures and mechanisms of social protection and enhancing a social state, are the policy goals of the labour ministry, Labour Minister Efi Achtsioglou said on Thursday.

Addressing a Regional Forum on the Reconstruction of Production in Heraklion, Crete, Achtsioglou said this policy aimed to change the country’s production model in order to make it sustainable and socially fair. She said that a total of 73,544 people have been included in focused programs to combat unemployment so far this year, and another 46,000 were expected to be included by the end of the year, totaling 120,000 unemployed people.

Achtsioglou said the government has introduced a new framework to protect workers from undeclared and unpaid work, adding that currently more than 610,000 citizens around the country were receiving a Social Solidarity Income benefit.
