Alt. Defence Min. does not see normalisation in Greek-Turkish relations soon

Greece’s relations with Turkey are not likely to return to normal soon, Alternate Defence Minister Fotis Kouvelis said on Alpha 989 radio on Monday, referring to a policy of tension being cultivated ahead of Turkey’s general elections, in which President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has included the detainment of the two Greek servicemen.

On this issue, Kouvelis said there were no new developments despite the intense pressure exerted by the Greek government on multiple levels. He said that the Turkish president was seeking to politically exploit the issue of the Greek servicemen ahead of the imminent elections in Turkey.

“Erdogan wants to keep open the field of so-called ‘differences,’ ‘claims’ and ‘grey zones’ in the Aegean, in an attempt, as he naively believes, to shape a framework for negotiations that aim at a Turkish presence in the wider region of Cyprus’ EEZ. That’s what they are interested in.”
