The case of the two Greek servicemen held in Turkey concerned “a border incident and nothing more,” and had to be seen in this light, Alternate Defence Minister Fotis Kouvelis said on Tuesday after meeting the parents of the two Greek soldiers being held in an Edirne prison. The meeting took place in the northeastern Greek city of Orestiada.
“I briefed them on all the actions being taken as this case unfolds, which concerns their arrest and ongoing detainment,” said Kouvelis, adding that “an effort is underway is to speed up the process, so that the competent Turkish court can decide on the charges they will face.”
Kouvelis expressed his belief that the court considering the case will be led to acquit the two defendants, given that any potential offence that may have been committed during the border incident would have been unintentional.
Regarding the conditions of their detainment, Kouvelis said that these were “good” but emphasised that the period of their imprisonment must not be prolonged.
