Alt. FinMin calls on Piraeus Bank to honor Hellenic Sugar Industry obligations

The government supports the farmers and workers of the troubled Hellenic Sugar Industry SA (HSI) and will do whatever it can to keep the industry in operation, Alternate Economy Minister Alexis Charitsis told the Athens Macedonian News Agency (ANA) on Thursday.

“Thousands of sugar beet producers remain unpaid these days for the 2017 production, a responsibility that lies solely with the Bank of Piraeus,” Charitsis said, “which refuses to provide the HSI with the necessary capital relief, despite its full backing by the company’s board of directors. This jeopardises both HSI and in general a very important sector of primary production in our country.”

He warned that “everyone should assume their responsibilities, primary of these being the crediting bank.”
