Appeals could upholds sentences for Chios’ blindness benefit scammers

A three-member appeals court upheld on Wednesday the convictions handed down by a lower court to 47 people involved in a health benefit scam at the island of Chios.

The court approved the suspended 4.5-year prison sentence for the island’s ophthalmologist who issued fake blindness certificates and the suspended 6-month sentence to the 46 recipients who fraudulently claimed the disability benefits. Only one accused was allowed to walk free.

Inspections conducted by relevant committees when the scandal broke out in 2012 found that claimants were in fact sighted.
