Athena International Olive Oil Competition announces olive oil awards for 2018

With the participation of 359 samples (a number up 22 pct from last year), a 20-member panel of judges completed the evaluation procedures of the “Athena International Olive Oil Competition (ATHIOOC) held in Delphi.

The judges awarded 13 grand gold medals, 100 gold medals, 89 silver medals and 40 bronze medals – or 242 in total – to olive oils from various countries. The prize for the best olive oil in the competition was awarded to Palacio de los Olivos, from Andalucia, Spain.

The higher quality of participating samples led to an increase in the number of awards (up 35 pct from last year), particularly in the gold and silver categories. Awards to Greek entries rose 46 pct, confirming expectations that the 2017/2018 crop would be of high quality. More specifically, from the 171 Greek olive oils entered into the ATHIOOC 2018 (up 10 pct from 2017), a total of 107 received medals (30 bronze, 54 silver and 22 gold, along with one grand gold for Omphacium Organic (Papadopoulos Olive Oil in Ilia) from the rare Nemoutiana variety.

The “Athena” international olive oil competition is organised in a different olive oil-producing region in Greece each year and brings together extra virgin olive oils from around the world. Foreign participations grew 35 pct this year. The 20 judges come from 11 different countries: Greece, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Israel, Croatia, USA, Japan, Germany, Tunisia and Australia.

The award ceremony will be held at the Zappeio Hall in Athens, April 28.
