It is a moral and political obligation to protect the European project, EU Commissioner for Migration and Internal Affairs Dimitris Avramopoulos on Friday said.
Avramopoulos was speaking at the Delphi Economic Forum to be held until March 5.
He added that the ideas shaping the European vision are now challenged by populism and nationalism voices that exploit the refugee crisis. “Some believed that the catalyst for challenging Europe would be the economic crisis. It turns out to be the refugee and migration crisis. And this is because the management of this crisis shook the two basic principles on which the European structure is founded: solidarity and responsibility,” he stated.
Moreover, Avramopoulos spoke about the need to promote European integration.
