United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki Moon on Tuesday contacted the head of Greece’s caretaker government Prime Minister Vassiliki Thanou on the telephone, informing her of a summit meeting on the refugee crisis to be held at the UN on September 30, alongside the UN General Assembly. He expressed hope that Greece will be represented at the highest possible level.
Thanou promised to convey his message to the head of the new government elected on September 20, noting that the UN was the most appropriate international body to address the refugee problem.
She also briefed him on additional measures taken by Greece’s caretaker government to deal with heightened refugee flows since it took over and the urgent nature of the issue. Thanou underlined the importance of close and steady cooperation between Greek governments and European authorities, as well as with the UN High Commission for Refugees, in handling this issue.
