It was in June 2012 when the French Carrefour announced its withdrawal from the Greek market, now the largest retailer in Europe is preparing for the official announcement of its big “return” with a partner, a subsidiary of the AVE of the Vardinoyannis Group, which is part of the first year plans phase of opening 8 stores across the country.
According to a joint announcement by Carrefour International Partnership and Retail & Μore S.A., looming expansion in Greece aims to place and develop the Carrefour brand in the local market.
In a more-or-less surprise development, the group added that it plans to open its first outlets in Greece by this summer, with the local partner being TeleUnicom.
In a statement, Carrefour International Partnerships executive director Patrick Lasfargues said the “…the Carrefour brand and products are well known to Greek customers and we are very excited to bring them the best of Carrefour. TeleUnicom will give us the best platform in order to enter this market quickly and efficiently. By setting up in Greece in 2022, Carrefour International maintains its strong development dynamic in new regions.”
Carrefour, which means “intersection”and “public square” in French, is based in France and is one of the largest supermarket chains in the world with a presence in more than 30 countries, in Europe, America, Asia and Africa. The first Carrefour store opened in 1960, making it the first group in Europe to open in its current supermarket style and the first to bring a large supermarket and department store together.
