Cavusoglu on Cyprus talks: Turkish side will not accept troops withdrawal, abolition of guarantees

Turkey will not accept a full withdrawal of its troops from Cyprus or abolishing guarantees, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said on Thursday, on the sidelines of the Cyprus Conference in Switzerland’s Crans-Montana.

Speaking to Turkish media, Cavusoglu called on the Greek side to “come up with more reasonable demands” for the negotiations, adding that the Turkish delegation would not continue negotiating forever and this latest round of talks are “final”.

He said that for Ankara, the zero guarantees and troop withdrawal are not the starting points of the talks. “We do not accept that,” he added, noting that the Turkish Cypriot side had shown the maximum flexibility it could offer, “but cannot abandon its main principles.”
