Chios island migrant facility on full lockdown after coronavirus cases

The VIAL Reception & Identification Center for migrants on Chios island is under full lockdown as of Thursday to August 25, authorities announced.

The decision by the Citizen Protection and Migration & Asylum Ministries with the National Public Health Organization was made after a single 35-year-old man and a staff member of the European Asylum Support Office (EASO) were found positive to the novel coronavirus earlier in the day.

Authorities are tracing their contacts and testing all staff at the facility. The young man, who originates from Yemen, is hospitalized with a fever at the NE Aegean island’s hospital.

Entry and exit is prohibited for all at the facility, and a police unit is on duty around it. In addition, the Asylum Service office and all NGO programs within the facility are suspended.
