Commission declines comment on ‘Washington Group’ meeting

European Commission spokesperson for economic affairs Annika Breidthardt on Wednesday declined to comment on a report in the German press regarding an alleged meeting of the “Washington Group” next Friday.

“We do not comment on leaks to the press,” Breidthardt said when asked to confirm whether this meeting will discuss the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) participation in the Greek programme, adding that it was not for the Commission to confirm or deny such meetings.

Asked when European Commissioner for Economic and Financial Affairs Pierre Moscovici intends to visit Athens, she said that the date will be announced on Friday.

Regarding the completion of the second review, Commission sources said that there was “continued contact on a staff and political level” and that “exceptional work” had been done during the mission to Athens, during which there was “significant progress”.
