The European Commission on Thursday distanced itself from comments by European Commissioner for Migration Dimitris Avramopoulos, who said on Wednesday “the Prespes Agreement is not balanced and thus problematic”.
European Commission spokesman Margaritis Schinas said that the Commission’s official position is the one expressed by its president Jean-Claude Juncker and by the relevant Commissioners, namely Federica Mongherini and Johannes Hahn, underlining that decisions were reached unanimously at the College of Commissioners.
Schinas said that the Comission’s position is that Prespes is an important Agreement, which resolved one of the longest-standing disputes in the region. It also provides an opportunity to leave the past behind and to introduce reconciliation in the region and, by extension, to Europe as a whole.
He added that the Commission is monitoring the process for the implementation of the Agreement and noted that what is important right now is the ratification process in the Greek parliament.
