Commissioner Avramopoulos: Three million refugees in Turkey wait to cross to Europe

Three million refugees in Turkey wait to cross to Europe, mainly through Greece, said European Commissioner for migration Dimitris Avramopoulos on Monday.

The commissioner had a meeting with President of the Hellenic Republic Prokopis Pavlopoulos in Athens. He warned that if the agreement between Turkey and the European Union on curbing the refugee flows to Europe fails, than Greece will face huge waves of migrants and refugees arriving at its shores.

On his part, Pavlopoulos said that the cohesion of the European Union now depends on the outcome of the battle to deal with the refugee crisis. If Turkey shows disregard for the agreement, then Europe will face a tremendous problem in the middle of the summer, Pavlopoulos said.

Avramopoulos said that Greece is at a crucial crossroads in regards to the refugee and security issues. Greeks must get together against the dangers that lie ahead, he said, and at the same time Greece is called to be the agent of stabilization in the area.

The commissioner stressed that at the moment three million refugees are in Turkey waiting to come to Europe.

Another 500,000 refugees are standing by in North African shores. Greece will be the first to feel the impact, he said.
