Conditions on islands for migrants in winter better than in previous years, Avramopoulos says

European Commissioner for Migration Dimitris Avramopoulos on Tuesday said that the Greek islands are better prepared to host migrants this winter in comparison with previous years. However, there is still margin for improvement, he said when asked about the prevailing conditions in the hotspots on Lesvos and Samos.

The European Commission, he said, has sent clear messages on how conditions can be improved and is offering full support to the Greek authorities: “We do not want to again experience situations such as those we saw during the harsh winter two years ago. I want to believe that all sides are better prepared but, of course, there is still room for improvement” he stated.
