CoS: Obligatory payment of doctors, lawyers by POS terminals entirely legal

The payment of doctors, lawyers and trade professionals solely through POS terminals is constitutional and legal, the Council of State ruled on Wednesday.

The Bar Associations of Athens, Serres and Drama, the Medical Association of Thessaloniki, the General Confederation of Professionals, Craftsmen and Traders of Greece (GSEVEE) and 19 individual doctors had challenged the law established in 2016 and the ministerial decisions backing it up as unconstitutional, contravening European and Greek laws, and illegal.

In its ruling, Greece’s highest administrative court determined that the laws were introduced to fight tax evasion and to increase state revenues, that payments through POS terminals do not contravene any Greek constitutional rules, and that the measure does not break legal or medical confidentiality.
