Eight men and one woman, all of them Turkish nationals, have been detained by Greece’s counter-terrorism squad, the police announced on Tuesday. The announcement clarified that they were not being held in connection with domestic terrorism or jihadist actions.
The suspects were taken into custody in three apartments in the Athens districts of Neos Kosmos and Kallithea, during an ongoing operation. According to reliable information, one of them is also wanted for a similar case involving Turkish nationals arrested in Greece.
Evidence found in the apartments included laptops, usb flash drives, clocks, wires and vases filled with an unknown substance that could possibly be materials for the construction of explosive devices.
The counter-terrorism squad located the suspects after following up a tip-off about suspicious movements in the area.
Police will make announcements once the operation is concluded.
