Crews rush to clean oil slick in Thermaikos Gulf

Crews in Thessaloniki are attempting to clean up a 20-square-meter oil slick located in the Thermaikos Gulf on Sunday, the coast guard said on Monday.

Although crews worked hard to limit the spill it eventually reached the shore, contaminating 150 meters of the coast. The spill was described as an iridescent film on the water surface which crews said was probably some petroleum product.

Ongoing investigations by Thessaloniki’s coast guard have so far failed to shed any light on who’s responsible while none of the ships anchored at the port are leaking fuel.
