Cycladic Islands to link to mainland electricity network next week, minister says

The Cycladic Islands will be connected to the mainland’s electricity network through an underwater cable next week, Environment and Energy Minister George Stathakis said at the Hellenic-Swedish Chamber of Commerce in central Athens on Tuesday.

Addressing the 4th Business Forum Greece-Sweden on “Creating Value for Climate Change”, Stathakis said that this was the first phase of the island electrification project.

He added that an underwater cable will transfer electricity from Lavrio on the mainland to the islands of Syros, Paros, Mykonos and Tinos.

Among other projects, Stathakis mentioned that a large-scale project using European Investment Bank funds worth 2 billion euros will upgrade public buildings – including schools and hospitals – to improve energy efficiency.
