Decision for demolition of the 450 buildings moves Hellinikon project ahead

The Central Council of Architecture approved the immediate demolition of 450 buildings on land of the Hellinikon project, on Monday.

The area under the project comprises 958 buildings. Some of those that will be preserved include the old former East Airport of Athens building, facilities of the Air Force, three churches, and facilities related to the water company (EYDAP), the Public Power Corporation, the tram, the Argyroupoli station metro and the so-called British hangar (pagoda), among others.

Deputy Minister of Environment and Energy Dimitris Economou said that “in the dramatic circumstances of the pandemic, the need for such strategically important moves becomes even more significant.” The decision, he said, “opens the way to the immediate start of works in the property.”
