Defence Minister Panos Kammenos, along with Rafina-Pikermi Mayor Evangelos Bournous and the Chief of the Hellenic Air Force General Staff, Lieutenant General Alcibiades Stefanis, on Thursday conducted a tour of the areas affected by the deadly fires in eastern Attica.
At a meeting held earlier in day in the Town Hall of Rafina, Bournous reported that 25 pecent of the houses, almost 1,500 in total, have been completely destroyed, 50 percent are partially damaged and 25 percent are intact.
The mayor of Rafina asked them to provide staff and open nurseries so that small children can spend their time creatively and forget the difficult moments they experienced. He also asked for the help of the army to rebuild the indoor gym in Neos Voutzas.
He also said that if it wasn’t for the army to stop the fire at the camp of Agios Andreas, the fire would have burnt the whole area.
On his part, Kammenos said that the ministry’s intention is to contribute to the full restoration of the area. He stressed that protection from floods is very important and the army will contribute to it immediately. He said that the town plan should be changed and roads opened giving access to the sea so that no further victims will be mourned in the future.
