Digital policy ministry launches public consultation on ‘major events list’

The digital policy, telecommunications and media ministry on Wednesday launched a period of public consultation for the creation of a list of events of major importance to which the public will have free televised access. The period of public consultation via OpenGov will last until April 30, with the Secretariat General for Media and Communication coordinating.

The list aims to ensure mandatory coverage of certain major events – including sports and cultural events – by television channels with free reception, as opposed to paid subscription television.

On the basis of current European practice, such events include the Olympic Games, the finals and semi-finals of the national football championships and world cup, the European basketball championships and world cup and others such events.

The process will begin with two meetings held with subscription and free television channels, while members of the public can currently post replies to specific questions on the site
