Draft bill on adoption and foster care passed in principle, following amendments

A draft bill on adoption and foster care was passed in principle by a Parliamentary committee on Wednesday, after Alternate Social Solidarity Minister Theano Fotiou agreed to certain changes.

The bill was backed by the ruling coalition parties SYRIZA and ANEL, as well as the Potami party. Main opposition New Democracy, the Democratic Alliance and Centrists’ Union expressed reservations about the bill, the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) abstained and Golden Dawn voted against.

The changes to the draft bill included the abolition of an upper age limit for foster care by family members and extending the financial remuneration to foster parents during the period when a foster child is doing military service.
