Draft law on adoption and fostering to drastically reduce waiting times, says Fotiou

The new draft law on fostering and adoption will speed up the procedures and drastically reduce waiting times for prospective parents, Alternate Social Solidarity Minister Theano Fotiou said on Thursday to the radio station “Sto Kokkino”. She noted that the process can currently take up to six years and acted as a deterrent for couples, who often resorted to illegal methods to adopt a child.

She also said that with the new law, the whole procedure will take eight to 12 months.

Asked about adoption by couples of the same sex, Fotiou explained that the civil partnership can be used as a vehicle for fostering candidates but not for adoption because the law allows adoption only for married couples. What is judged in the social examination is the quality of the candidate parents not their sex,” she explained.
