Employee at the National Opera in Athens arrested last week for embezzling 111,000 euros

An employee at the National Opera in Athens who was in charge of the cash registers was arrested last week for embezzling 111,000 euros, the country’s state lyric opera company said on Monday.

The fraud was discovered during a routine audit of the Opera’s cash reserves on October 19, during which auditors found an 111,000-euro deficit in revenues. Further investigation revealed that the perpetrator was the cashier manager who confessed his action to the management and was subsequently sued.

“The management immediately suspended the employee and then decided unanimously to fire him,” the National Opera said in a press release.

The perpetrator had been an employee at the National opera since 1999 and had a private law employment contract of indefinite duration.
