Employment in food retail sector up 2.9 pct in 2017, survey shows

Employment in the food retail sector grew 2.9 pct in 2017, led by supermarkets, the Research Institute of Retail Consumer Goods (IELKA) said in a survey released on Wednesday.

The survey showed that the food retail sector, amid intense economic recession, was one of the most dynamic sectors of the economy in regard with employment in the period 2010-2017. In the six-year period, employment in the sector grew 10.8 pct, while the retail sector as a whole recorded a 2.3 pct decline in employment and the Greek economy in general a 14.4 pct drop, the survey said. IELKA said the food retail sector employed around 20,000 more workers in 2017 compared with 2010, to a total of more than 200,000 workers.

The sector’s employment grew 2.9 pct in 2017 compared with 2016, while the retail sector in general recorded a 2.3 pct increase over the same period.

IELKA said employment in the food retail sector accounted for almost 30 pct of employment in the retail/wholesale sector and more than 5.0 pct of total employment in Greece.
