Environment ministry introduces draft bill on waste management

The ministry of energy and environment submitted in parliament on Thursday a draft bill incorporating EU law and directives on reuse, recovery, and recycling of waste.

The bill will change the main legislative framework on waste management in Greece where 81 percent of waste is still buried and clarify issues relating to the Hellenic Recycling Agency. It also redefines the terms and conditions for the alternative management of municipal packaging waste and a provision is made to reduce the use of plastic bags.

“The proposed legal provisions mark the decision for a substantial strengthening of alternative management and for the support of the cyclical economy, aiming at an economic transformation and the creation of a new economy that is being developed in a safer environment,” the ministry says.
