The European Commission has responded to Greece’s request and sent an anti-pollution vessel to assist in efforts to clean up an oil spill in the Saronic Gulf.
According to the Commission’s announcement on Thursday, Greece activated the European Mechanism of Policy Protection, asking for the contribution of a vessel.
The request was sent to the Emergency Response Coordination Centre (ERCC), which responded immediately and arranged for a vessel to be sent.
“The ERCC responded immediately to Greece’s request and I am pleased to see another example of solidarity in practice. The vessel offered by the European organisation for safety in the sea has already started operating in the affected areas,” stated European Commissioner of Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management Christos Stylianides.
