European Court of Justice accepts Commission’s appeal against Greece on the protection of caretta caretta

The European Court of Justice announced on Thursday that it accepts European Commission’s appeal against Greece submitted in 2011 on the protection of caretta caretta. Today’s decision refers to the geographic area of Kyparissia while previous appeals referred to the Ionian islands.

In 2006 the European Commission included the sand dunes of Kyparissia in the list of areas of Community importance because of the existence of caretta caretta. The sea turtle is considered by the European law a species of community importance that needs protection and its existence requires the creation of special preservation zones.
